UPOU 2nd Wood Design Contest

Happy International Wood Day! To celebrate this special occasion, the UP Open University, in cooperation with the UPOU Foundation, Inc. and the International Wood Culture Society is calling out entries for the 2nd Wood Design & Carving Competition. Running on the theme: "WoodConnEctions: Wood in a Changing Culture", the event will be highlighted by competitions in Wood Collapsible House Design, Wood Furniture, and Woodcarving. Anyone can join except for the last category which required only wood carvers to participate. Submit your entries to the UPOU on or before the deadline date. Show your craftsmanship and win P30,000, P20,000, or P10,000 respectively in each category. Note: Non-winning entries can be sold at the event, however, the UP Open University will get 30% from the sale.

Contest Requirements:
  • Woodcarving Category - Open to all wood carvers
Contest Mechanics:
  1. Log on to upou.edu.ph to download the registration form in PDF and DOC format
  2. Theme: "Wood ConnEctions: Wood in a Changing Culture"
  3. Three (3) Categories:
    • Wood Collapsible House Design
    • Wood Furniture
    • Woodcarving
  4. Entry Guidelines
    • Wood Collapsible House Design Category
      • At least 70% wood in terms of materials, and the rest in plant-based materials (e.g., rattan, abaca, bamboo, etc.)
      • Consider climate change factors
      • Original, have been created in the last two years, and have not been previously published, and have not previously won a prize in a similar competition
      • 3D model made out of wood- or plant-based materials
      • Design plan, which includes perspective, architectural details, and bill of materials. The plan can be either hand drawn on paper or made using computer-aided design program
      • Electronic files of the design must be saved onto a DVD
    • Wood Furniture Category
      • At least 70% wood in terms of materials, and the rest in plant-based materials (e.g., rattan, abaca, bamboo, etc.)
      • Original, have been created in the last two years, and have not been previously published, and have not previously won a prize in a similar competition
    • Woodcarving Category
      • Entries can either be bas-relief (at least 11x12x3 inches) or "in the round" (at least 16x6x6 inches)
      • You will provide your own wood
      • You can only submit one (1) artwork
  5. Submit your 3D models and design plan to:
    • UP Open University, Los Banos, Laguna
    • You may also submit your Wood Collapsible House Design entries to any  UPOU Learning Centers or:
      • UPOU Learning Center
        Diliman ICTO Building 
        (formerly National Computer Center) 
         C.P. Garcia Avenue, UP Diliman, Quezon City
  6. Judging Criteria
    • Wood Collapsible House Design Category
      • Entries will be judged based on design and functionality, economic feasibility, innovation of the concept,and sensitivity to local and cultural issues
    • Wood Furniture Category
      • Entries will be judged based on functionality, aesthetics, originality, and innovation
    • Woodcarving Category
      • Entries will be judged based on context, clarity of intent, effectiveness of design, use of material difficulty, and craftsmanship
  7. The decision of the judges is final
  8. The winning entries will be the property of the contest organizers. You will, however, retain the ownership of the design
  9. Non-winning entries can be sold at the event. The UP Open University will get 30% from the sale
  10. The organizers shall release photos and videos of the entries for educational purposes

Upside
