The 1st Akapela Open

Submission of entries for the 1st Akapela Open competition is still ongoing. The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab in cooperation with the PLDT Smart Foundation and One Meralco Foundation launched the first contemporary a cappella ensemble singing contest in the country. This aims to promote the love for contemporary a cappella singing and the appreciation for vocal harmony performance, provide a venue for new arrangements of Philippine and international contemporary vocal music, offer growth experiences for singers and arrangers, and cultivate a community of contemporary a cappella singers. Contemporary music such as Pop, Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop & Rap, and Rock are allowed. Submit your best performance video to qualify for the live auditions. Once shortlisted, sing your way to the semi-finals and finals round for a chance to win the Grand Prize worth P250,000. Runners-up will also receive P150,000 and P100,000 respectively. Lastly, the Best Arrangement of a Filipino song will be awarded P50,000 cash.


Contest Requirements:
  • Open to a cappella singing ensembles whose members are aged 18 years old and above
  • Minimum of three (3) to a maximum of twelve (12) singers per group
  • Competing groups can be all male, all female, or mixed voices
  • P1,000 fee once accepted into the live auditions
Contest Mechanics:
  1. Log on to akapelaopen.com and fill out the online application form
  2. Entry Guidelines
    • Level 1
      • Your group may use an existing contemporary arrangement of a piece
      • 1 song only
      • 25MB maximum video file size
      • Performance video must not exceed 3 minutes duration
      • No instruments are allowed whether as textural add-ons or counterpoints. Rhythmic body percussion such as snapping of fingers, clapping of hands and stomping of feet are allowed
      • Movement is encouraged
      • Contemporary music allowed: Pop, Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop and Rap, Rock
    • Level 2
      • Live auditions
      • Your group shall be required to submit five (5) hard copies of your repertoire's arrangements
      • Stage movement is encouraged
    • Level 3
      • Semi-Finals
      • Groups are required to sing at least one full song written by a Filipino - either in English or Filipino/Tagalog
      • Group shall sing its own arrangement of the songs they will perform
      • Maximum of 10 minutes performance time
      • Stage movement is encouraged
    • Level 4
      • Finals
      • Groups are required to sing at least one full song written by a Filipino - either in English or Filipino/Tagalog
      • Group shall sing its own arrangement of the songs they will perform
      • Maximum of 10 minutes performance time
      • Stage movement is encouraged
  3. Upload your group's performance video upon registration
  4. Judging Criteria
    • Musicality - dynamics, expression, vocal control through genuine feeling, ease of interpretation and performance, enunciation
    • Musicanship - technical skill, intonation, harmony, balance, rhythmic precision
    • Stage Presence - confidence, stage discipline, body movement
  5. Your group may perform the same set of songs throughout the whole competition process
  6. Time starts on the first note and ends when the group finishes its last song. In case a group exceeds the time limit, the judges reserve the right to deduct points from the group
  7. You may not perform in more than one competing group
  8. The contest is not the traditional choral competition, thus, conductors are not allowed
  9. Your group is allowed to bring along a maximum of two (2) production assistants to the competition

Contest Period:
  • Level 1 - Submission of video entries from August 1 - September 7, 2013, 11:59PM
  • Level 2 - October 5 & 6, 2013 at The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab
  • Level 3 - (Semi-Finals) October 12, 2013 at The Music School of Ryan Cayabyab
  • Level 4 - (Finals) October 30, 2013 at the Meralco Theater
    • Technical Rehearsal - October 29
Contest Prize:
  • Grand Prize - P250,000
  • First Runner-up - P150,000
  • Second Runner-up - P100,000
  • Best Arrangement of a Filipino song - P50,000
